Looking Forward (NOT New Year Resolutions)

The wind is whistling, big snowflakes rapidly descending, promising a gradual whitening ground. I fail to capture it on camera, the flakes are too quick and my know-how is elusive. I'm glad the holidays are finally over and the house is being organized, cleaned, plans for outside repairs are being made into a proposal for insurance reimbursement. I was too sick after Thanksgiving (with a bad cold or flu that lasted two weeks) to make things I had planned, mail out cards, shop. Good thing I could order things online, everything got here on time for gift exchanges, with one exception. I hope to have more time to concentrate on several things this year. I'll finally have some quiet time with the house to myself so I can hear myself think! Plans/Things I hope to accomplish this year: Apply for disability since I can't see correctly to drive and have been sick too often to work. Make appointments for an opthomologist and dentist. I've been recommended for lens replacement su...

Heather's Brat and Potato Soup‏

I was emailed this recipe by a relative and am posting here to share with others because it sounds so good, you might want to try it. (These amounts were for two people with enough left over for one lunch tomorrow.) 3 bratwurst or other uncooked sausage, casings removed 1 1/2 tbsp vegetable oil (I used extra virgin olive oil, I think it made it a little tastier) 1 potato (or more, but that's all I had) cut in small cubes, skin on About 1 cup cabbage (maybe 1/4 of a big head of cabbage? you'll probably leave this bit out, maybe you could substitute another filler veggie such as green beans) 2 1/2 cups chicken broth 1 tbsp flour 1/4 cup sour cream 1 tbsp red wine vinegar (apple cider vinegar would probably be yummy too) Good sprinkle of dill weed Tiny bit of salt and pepper Break up sausage in skillet, browning until no longer pink and in small eatable sized chunks. Heat oil in ...

Cutting Costs

With the wonderful downward spiral trend in our world economy, comes the time to tighten the proverbial belt and trim costs. Alas, this has never been a new thing for me. All my life I've learned to do with less than others. Partly because I came from a lower-middle-class family with a hard-working-drinking dad, stay-at-home mom and several kids. Partly due to the fact that I always had to share or learn to divvy things in half with my twin sister. Throw in other factors, such as moving lots so Dad could keep a decent job; later joining a full-time, non-profit group; later marrying a guy who did carpentry and then having a few children to provide for. Now that half the kids are gone you'd think it would be easier, but add the fact that I am unable to work now and depending solely on hubby's income. You get the picture yet? Here are some recent ideas I've had for dealing with the changes: I used to get my hair done every six weeks. My hairdresser friend originally wanted...
